Provocation or Prelude to Empire Building

President-elect Donald Trump's remarks on January 7, 2025, during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago have raised eyebrows. When asked about using military pressure to gain control over Greenland and the Panama Canal, he bluntly and tactfully retorted, "No, I can't guarantee you on either of those, but I can tell you this: we need them for economic stability."
This isn’t the first time Trump has stirred controversy with bold, provocative statements, and his comments about Greenland, Canada, and Panama are far from random.
If we look beyond today’s headline-grabbing media rhetoric, this is more of the same for Trump. Throughout his career, Trump has leveraged grandiose statements to shape his political identity and create narratives that serve his strategic interests. While many of these can be dismissed as political theater or mere posturing, there seems to be a deeper strategy at play.
